ATTN brother's and sister's on layoff
Just a couple things that I am seeing:

1. Some employees are not reporting their vacation pay/holiday pay.

2. Some of the employees that ARE reporting their vacation pay are reporting the NET as opposed to the gross pay.

3. Some employees only certified for one week but turned in a sub pay form for 2 weeks. Lisa was made aware that some people certified and then realized they only certified for one week and went in and did the second week the following day. In that case they need to put both print outs (as they will be paid each week separately) with the sub pay form to claim the 2 weeks.

If they don’t realize that they did not claim until the following week or later they will have to work with UIA to see if they can get that week but they are NOT permitted to claim the week in question for sub.

4. I also have seen employees not seeking work so they are not paid for the week. They have to seek work (2 places) each week they are on UIA unless they work strictly out of a union hall then it is (1 place) per week.

5. If an employee did not report a safety bonus back in 2012 and they have an outstanding balance with UIA…. UIA will recoup the outstanding balance before dispersing funds. In this case Cliffs will be deducting the full amount of UIA as if they received it.

Attached you will find a print out that laid off employees can print off of MI WAM that payroll will be able to use instead of them having to go to their banks. (I believe they should be able to do this the day they certify - so if they certify on Monday they can send in sub forms on Monday also as opposed to waiting until Wednesday - when the money gets into their account) I have redacted all identifying information obviously the employee would not have to do that :)

Also I have attached an email that I sent out today regarding a few phone calls I have received regarding registering for work.

Can you please put all of this information on the website so it gets out to the members?

It has been brought to my attention on the sub pay form some employees are feeling uncomfortable because of what the end of this statement says that they are certifying for (Below in red). This lay off is less than 120 days so they DO NOT have to register with MI Works. I told the people who called that they can just sign the form and send it in because they are meeting all requirements that are in effect for this lay off. Joe Doe specifically asked if he could cross out that section because of the issue that happened during last lay off with sub pay. I told him no but he could cross with one line the portion about active registration.



I certify that, as of my date of layoff, I had two (2) or more years of continuous service and that during the weeks covered by this application,

I was LAID OFF, available for work, and maintained an active registration with my state employment service.



Employees were told at the lay off meetings that their recall date was 10.18.2015 and if the layoff goes past that we will update them to register for work with Mi Works. That means they would have to put a resume online with Mi Works. This is different than the seeking work requirement which they do have to conduct (2 per week) in order to receive UIA.

The Empire 2015 vacation shutdown notice has been significantly revised. If your name was on the original Vacation Shutdown notice (posted on May 29, 2015) but is not on the current Vacation Shutdown notice (posted today), you are not part of the shutdown. As such, the vacation week(s) moved into the weeks of August 2 or August 9 will be moved back to where they were originally scheduled.
If the week(s) moved in have already occurred, they will have to be re-scheduled for a week later in the year, subject to quotas.

2015 SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION RULES

In order to recognize the achievements of high school students and to assist them in furthering their education, the United Steel-workers Amalgamated Local Union 4950, offers a scholarship program to provide financial assistance to sons, daughters and legal wards of current members in good standing and all former members who retired as a member in good standing from Local Union 4950.

A “member in good standing” is defined for this purpose as one who pays dues or is exonerated from dues payment in compliance with Article XIV of the Constitution of the International Union.

USW Amalgamated Local Union 4950 will make available four (4) five-hundred dollar ($500) scholarships to be used for education at any recognized college, university, or vocational school in the United States or Canada.

No restriction is placed on eligibility because of race, creed, color, gender, nationality or political affiliation. Only high school students graduating during the award year (2015) shall be eligible.

An award recipient shall be declared ineligible and all financial assistance payments will cease immediately in the event that the qualifying member leaves the bargaining unit.



Scholarship recipients will be selected from a lottery-type drawing from all applicants who have a minimum 2.0 grade point average (GPA) and will be registered as a full-time student as defined by the applicable college, university or vocational school. Three (3) alternates will also be selected in the event an award recipient is later declared ineligible.

No recipient shall be eligible for more than one (1) of the $500 scholarships sponsored by the local union. Payment of the award will be made directly to the student upon providing the Financial Secretary of Local 4950 with proof of admittance and attendance.

All matters pertaining to the selection of scholarship winners will be decided by the Scholarship Committee and their decision is final. The winners of the awards will be notified by mail along with announcements placed on workplace bulletin boards.

The granting of a scholarship does not guarantee entrance to a college, university or vocational school and the local union assumes no responsibility for admission. All negotiations for admittance are the responsibility of the scholarship applicant.

Completed applications must be submitted so as to be in possession of the Scholarship Committee no later than 4:30 P.M. May 12th, 2015. Blank applications can be obtained at Ronn Hall, the Mine Union Office or from any local union officer.

An election of officers will be held on April 14th, 2015 for the offices of President, Vice President, Recording Secretary, Financial Secretary, Treasurer, Guide, Guards (2), Trustees (3), and positions of Unit Grievers Empire Mine (10) and positions of Unit Griever(s) for the amalgamated units.

There will be three (3) polling places for voting:

Between the hours of 5:00 A.M. and 4:00 P.M. on April 14th, 2015

Requests for Absentee Ballots must be made in writing to the Chairperson of the Election Committee and indicate with accurate detail the work assignment, vacation or Military Service preventing the member from appearing at a polling place. Such requests must be received by the Chairperson of the Election Committee no less than seven (7) days prior to the election date.
